Tracking the Eastern Wolf - New Insights from Quebec

May, 21, 2026

Earthroots continues with its citizen scientist crew collecting scat and urine samples for DNA analysis to delineate the full range of the threatened eastern wolf (and we always welcome new volunteers to help us). We also are supplementing that effort with ‘Eyes in the Forest’ cameras documenting a wide range of wildlife in our Crown forests. We have always been aware that the eastern wolf population habitat ranges east into Quebec but we have had little information to share in that regard, until now.

Recently, there has been a Parks Canada report, “Conserving the Eastern Wolf population in La Mauricie National Park.” which shines some light on that area. La Mauricie National Park is ecologically quite similar to Algonquin Park in Ontario and it likely delineates the eastern limit of the species habitat. In the report (link below) they describe the challenges quite like what we are experiencing in this province but in their case, much more serious. Their park population is down to two small packs totalling around 20 wolves. We applaud their recent efforts to increase public sensitivity of the situation and wish them every success. Earthroots is attempting to contact those involved since we share common purpose.
