The Double-crested Cormorant colony on Middle Island, Point Pelee National Park, is causing localized changes to vegetation around their nest sites, much like every other bird colony in the world. Parks Canada is proposing the lethal cull of thousands of cormorants on Middle Island as part of a "conservation plan" for the Carolinian ecosystem found there. The Double-crested Cormorant is a native species which is considered part of the Carolinian ecosystem and as such, should be left to nest peacefully on the island regardless of the size of the colony. While Parks Canada suggests that culling is necessary to protect the “ecological integrity” of the island, such a management strategy will in fact interfere with natural processes. If Parks Canada proceeds with the proposed management strategy, Cormorant Defenders International (CDI) will be present throughout the cull. It is essential to have dedicated activists on the water to document this cruel and unnecessary activity - please visit the CDI website to find out what you can do to help! http://www.cormorantdefenders.ca Voice your concerns about the proposed cormorant cull by sending a free fax to the Minister of the Environment. http://www.earthroots.org/index.php/Cormorant-Fax-Centre.html |
