Hamilton-based author Kay Chornook brings the wet misty cloud forests of Central America to life with the publication of Walking with Wolf: Reflections on a life spent protecting the Costa Rican wilderness.  With lyrical prose and a wealth of biological and historical detail, this book tells the story of Wolf Guindon: conscientious objector turned trailblazer, chainsaw dealer turned award-winning conservationist. Beginning in 1951, Wolf struggled to tame the dense tropical forest of and develop a dairy farm to provide for his growing family. When scientists began recognizing the incredible biodiversity of the area, Wolf realized the impact of his actions and devoted his life to preserving and protecting the flora and fauna of the area with the creation of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.

In 1989, Kay was an organizer and resident at the Temagami Wilderness Society's blockade camp on Lake Wakimika. A few months later she visited Monteverde as a volunteer, went on a six-day hike with Wolf and started recording his stories. Her years living in the bush of northeastern Ontario, as a board member of TWS, and as a social activist bring a Canadian content to the book. The narrative discusses how nature and conservation are linked  across borders and emphasizes that we all share the responsibility of taking care of our planet. Her observations, along with Wolf's lifetime of tales, make Walking with Wolf a celebration of lives well-lived amongs the trees of both Costa Rica and Canada.

Kay will be celebrating the release of the book at the Chat Noir Bookstore in New Liskeard on Friday, September 12th at 7:00 PM (with Dave Patterson of the Wabi Delta Band); at the Moon Cafe in Mattawa on Sunday, September 14th at 2:00 PM (with musical accompaniment); and at Hibou Boutique in North Bay on Tuesday, September 16th at 7:00 PM.  If you are in the area, take a side trip to the lush jungle and get your monkey on, but leave your machete at home.
