Province's board rejects town's bid to include moraine experts in development reviewPhinjo Gombu The mayor of Aurora and a lawyer for residents opposed to a controversial condo-golf complex on the Oak Ridges Moraine are slamming a decision by the Ontario Municipal Board not to hold a special joint hearing with the province's environmental review panel. "To say that I was disappointed in the ruling would be an understatement," Mayor Phyllis Morris said yesterday, adding council is now considering its options. The council voted against the project last month but the developer appealed its decision to the OMB, which can overrule municipal rulings. "It's a very unsatisfactory decision," said Rod Northey, lawyer for residents opposed to the proposed 18-hole golf course and 75-unit condominium complex on Leslie St. north of Bloomington Rd. Opponents had hoped that the environmental panel would be given a voice in the matter, because their central argument concerns how the project would affect water resources on the environmentally sensitive moraine. The moraine has been under provincial protection since 2001, but developments approved before the law was passed are being grandfathered in. Environmentalists and residents are concerned about adverse effects on the aquifer that supplies much of Aurora's water, given the 17 golf courses already in place within an 8-kilometre radius.
