Town council opposition to development plan on Oak Ridges land pleases green advocates Phinjo Gombu The Town of Aurora has voted to oppose a controversial golf course and condominium complex, contested by residents and environmentalists, that would have been situated on the environmentally sensitive Oak Ridges Moraine. The 7-1 council vote came after a late-night meeting that involved last-minute pleas from residents, environmentalists and the developer, Lebovic Homes, about the future of the proposed 18-hole golf course and 75-unit condominium complex on Leslie St. just north of Bloomington Rd. "The Oak Ridges Moraine is something that we all have to be concerned about," said Mayor Phyllis Morris on a motion to deny the proposal that had been brought forward by Councillor Evelina MacEachern. The vote means residents have a powerful ally in their battle, which will now move to the Ontario Municipal Board. "It would be shameful to say let the residents absorb the cost (of the fight against the developer)," said MacEachern. Council also voted to support environmentalists and residents in their quest to have the issue dealt with by a joint-board that involves both the Ontario Municipal Board and an environmental review panel that will consider concerns other than planning issues.
